Consumer Reports has a new report on the safety and efficacy of a new medication to lower heartburn. It includes the results of two trials and two meta-analyses on 14 different medications. The first trial was a combination of omeprazole and esomeprazole, which showed that the medication reduced the heartburn symptoms by about a month compared to placebo.
The second trial, which was sponsored by Pfizer, demonstrated that the medication reduced the frequency of heartburn and other stomach symptoms. The FDA approved Nexium for adults with heartburn.
Both trials and meta-analyses showed that the medication increased heartburn symptoms by up to 70 percent and increased frequency of the stomach symptoms by up to 15 percent. This is the first randomized controlled trial to demonstrate that the medication is safe and effective for reducing heartburn and other stomach symptoms.
The study also found that a small percentage of patients who took omeprazole had some degree of heartburn after taking it for more than a year. The medication should be taken as directed by a healthcare provider.
